Zonta Club of Royal Gorge
2011 Young Women in Public Affairs Award Recipient Named
Kathryn Amanda Drake, Garden Park High School student, of Canon City was named the recipient of the 2011 Zonta Club of the Royal Gorge Region Young Women in Public Affairs Award.
The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing a young woman’s (age 16-19) commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.
Ms. Kathryn Amanda Drake was named Zonta Club of the Royal Gorge Region Young Women in Public Affairs recipient because of her school leadership and local volunteer work with Canon Lodge and Safety Town. Ms. Drake intends to pursue further education, and to eventually work in law enforcement or as a firefighter. Amanda believes it is important to reach out to younger girls in the community to help build up their pride and self confidence.
The Zonta Club of Royal Gorge works to provide scholarships to women in Fremont County. The Club provides a $1000 scholarship annually to a non-traditional woman college student and a $300 award for the Young Women in Public Affairs Award to a local high school student. The annual Artful Women Exhibition and the Royal Gorge Artist Challenge each fall are some of their fund raising events.
Zonta International, with world headquarters in Oak Brook, IL, USA, is a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. The Young Women in Public Affairs Award is one of many programs for women and girls sponsored by Zonta International. The Award is funded by voluntary contributions to the Zonta International Foundation. Applications for the 2012 Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award will be available from zonta.org in Fall 2011. Applicants must be pre-university or pre-college students (age 16-19).
