2008-2009 Local Service Projects
In true Zontian spirit, the Zonta Club of Laramie finished up a productive
season of service. Local service projects included Birth Kit assembly,
hosting CLIMB Wyoming Celebrations, collecting books for Namibia, and
starting participation in the Court Watch Program. The Birth Kit Assembly
day took place in March where about 1,000 birthing kits were assembled. The
last CLIMB Wyoming Celebration took place on July at the Alice Hardy Stevens
Center where nine women graduated from the program. We collected books in
the spring for the Books for Namibia program and they arrived at their
destination in May. The spring Zonta highway clean up was postponed due
to weather and will be rescheduled for a later date. Stay tuned for future
project dates!
Fashion Show.
Excitement is in the air as the plans are underway for the Fashion Show
celebrating year number 25 !!!!! The date has been booked at Hilton
Garden Inn and UW Conference Center for Saturday November 7. New members
Angela (Gulino) Ver Ploeg and Maryalice Gulino are the chairs. This is a
large scale project and the Zontians who volunteered to be part of the
committee will soon be contacted for organizational meetings. The theme of
this year's event will focus on accentuating the 25th anniversary. Angela has
already been busy being creative in terms of incorporating a silver
anniversary theme and symbols that are near and dear to Zonta into the
various aspects of the Fashion Show event. Look for the tables to be
decorated beautifully, and the fashion show itself to have exciting new
elements. The only hint that the two chairs are giving at present time
about the exact plans is that they are requesting that members who have been
a part of various aspects of the history of the organization please start
looking through photo albums and scrapbooks that you may have. History will
be highly incorporated into the theme. There are high hopes that this event
will be one of THE talked about events in Laramie's calendar year.
Suited for Success.
The Zonta Club of Laramie sponsors a clothing bank that serves women in need
of appropriate apparel and accessories for job interviews and the workplace.
Birthing Kits. Club members and friends of Zonta assemble birthing
kits 1-2 times per year that are shipped to organizations that support
women in 3rd world countries. Approximately 1000 birthing kits were
shipped to India in 2008 - 2009. Most of the supplies for the birthing kits
are donated by local businesses.
ClimbWyoming Support. Zonta club members provide support to
ClimbWyoming by providing interviewers for mock job interviews. The club
also provides recognition to Climb graduates by hosting celebrations at the
conclusion of ClimbWyoming training sessions.
Community Food Baskets and Food Drives. In November, club members
helped assemble food baskets for community members in need. In 2009, the
club also held a food drive at the March meeting to help replenish a local
food bank.
Laramie Plains Museum/Ivinson Mansion Holiday Open House. Club
members provide cookies and serve refreshments during the Open House Event
in December at the historic Ivinson Mansion.
Salvation Army Bell Ringing. The chair of this committee is known to
say "Calling all Ding-a-lings" and she always gets a great response!
Members can sign up to participate for one-hour commitments to ring the
bells and collect donations for the Salvation Army.
Books for Namibia. This year, the club held a book drive for the
development of a library in Namibia. This project was conducted in
collaboration with a Peace Corps volunteer from Wyoming who is currently
serving in Namibia.
Highway Clean-up. Club members gather 1-2 times per year to clean up
a stretch of Highway 130, south of Laramie.
